Gizmosis is a student created 2D maze defence game designed in Adobe Flash.   A design inspired by classic arcade style, the student team that created this project wanted to capture the essence of the mechanic in an abstract environment (the Geometry Wars like neon world dubbed “Gizmo City” by the less abstract members of the team).  This project was part of a 2008 class in Flash game design held at Vancouver Film School (Game Design 09).

The challenge for this team was learning how to cope with the idea of an invincible hero.  When contending with enemies, where is the fear?  The fear comes from the fact that the object you are defending is not so invincible.  When it dies, the game ends, so you may as well have died.  The lesson learned in Gizmosis is:

The player is not defined solely by the avatar they move around, but by all the game elements that impact player decisions.

This fun little game was successful enough to warrant a sequel.  This is an opportunity to further explore this defence mechanic without having secondary projects and a learning curve keeping this game from realizing its full potential.
